I’ve been reading a lot – A LOT – of short stories this year. Sometimes it seems as if I could one day be really very good at writing them, others not so much.
Sometimes I get a bit bogged down by the lyric beauty of the vast majority of the short story winners because, like George Saunders (yes, I do cling to this) I am not massively interested in descriptive writing.
So it is very heartening to read this chap. This is what I would choose to read too. And he organises (sadly doesn’t judge – but chooses the judges, I assume) a massive short story competition.
Yay.
Do you agree with Billy? What do you look for in a short story?
